Registering to practise architecture, country by country

If you qualified in one European country and want to work in another, this is the map: who registers architects, whether you legally need to register at all, and how your diploma is recognised. The short version — an EU architecture degree on the Directive 2005/36/EC list is recognised automatically almost everywhere; the paperwork, and whether the title is even protected, is what changes.

How EU recognition works, in one paragraph. Architecture is a “sectoral” profession under EU Directive 2005/36/EC: a qualification listed in its Annex V is recognised automatically in every other EU/EEA country — the host chamber must register you without re-examining your studies. Qualifications not on the list go through the “general system” (the authority compares your training and can ask for an aptitude test or adaptation period). Two big exceptions below: the UK left the automatic system after Brexit, and the Nordics + Switzerland don’t protect the title at all, so there’s often nothing to register for. Always confirm the current procedure with the authority itself — this is a map, not legal advice.
